The researchers aimed to investigate whether the act of sharing spiritual experiences and providing supportive listening, rather than merely identifying as religious, significantly impacts relationship quality. The results demonstrated that higher levels of spiritual intimacy correlated with increased emotional intimacy, relationship satisfaction, and commitment. These relationships remained significant even when controlling for factors such as religious attendance and shared beliefs among partners.

Further details about the study reveal that the researchers engaged 207 students from a midwestern U.S. university who were in dating relationships, with an average duration of approximately 19 months. The majority of participants were female (83 percent), White (85 percent), and heterosexual (80 percent).

Slightly more than half of the respondents identified as theists, while the remainder were atheists, agnostics, or adhered to other belief systems. Participants completed surveys designed to evaluate several critical dimensions of their romantic relationships. To measure spiritual intimacy, they answered questions regarding the frequency of shared spiritual or religious experiences, doubts, or challenges, as well as the level of support and understanding provided by their partner during these discussions.
