Ambivalent relationships pose significant challenges in establishing and sustaining trust, often proving to be the most toxic and difficult to manage. A recent episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast from April 2024 features a clip in which body language expert Vanessa Van Edwards explains that ambivalent relationships are marked by mixed emotions, conflicting feelings, and uncertain attitudes towards one another, frequently blurring or ignoring personal boundaries.
'Ambivalence means you are not sure'
Vanessa elaborates that ambivalence signifies uncertainty. In her view, such relationships encompass both positive and negative emotions simultaneously, complicating the process of defining or navigating the relationship. She asserts, “The most toxic relationships are not necessarily those that are overtly harmful; rather, they are the ambivalent ones. Ambivalence represents a challenge to our work and social energy, and highly effective individuals excel at avoiding ambivalence. It indicates a lack of clarity about whether one loves or hates the situation, leading to a sense of indifference. This neutrality can be particularly perilous.”
What do ambivalent relationships look like?
Ambivalent relationships often manifest as emotionally taxing and draining experiences. Vanessa illustrated this with a common scenario: "Consider a friend whose presence is marked on your calendar. You might find yourself contemplating, 'Should I cancel? I feel so exhausted,' or 'I’m not particularly excited about this, but we have a long-standing friendship.' Despite the long-standing arrangement, during the interaction, you may question whether it is enjoyable, whether they are genuinely supportive, or if their comments carry a passive-aggressive undertone. Upon leaving, you might struggle to recall the conversation or wonder, 'Do they truly appreciate me? Did I gain any insights? Was I asked meaningful questions?' Such dynamics typify an ambivalent relationship, which often demands more emotional energy than both positive and toxic relationships. It is essential to decline unhealthy connections to create space for more fulfilling ones.
