The Hidden Reason You Always Have Room for Dessert

Do you find yourself desiring sweet confections even when you are completely satiated? Research indicates that the same neurons that signal fullness are also implicated in our desire for an additional serving of dessert.
A recent study conducted by Dr. Henning Fenselau at the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research has revealed this dual function of brain cells, shedding light on the phenomenon of craving sugary treats despite being full.
Findings of the study:
The research, published in the journal Science, examined the dual role of POMC neurons, specialized brain cells recognized for their function in appetite suppression. Interestingly, these same neurons are responsible for inducing a specific craving for sugar through an alternative mechanism.
The investigation involved both mice and thirty healthy human participants. In the mouse subjects, a decreased interest in sugary foods was noted, while there was a marked preference for fatty foods. In the human participants, researchers analyzed brain responses to sugar solutions compared to water. The findings indicated that the neuronal activity in both species exhibited similar patterns.
Dr. Henning Fenselau remarked, “From an evolutionary standpoint, this is logical: sugar is scarce in nature but offers rapid energy. The brain is wired to regulate sugar intake whenever it is accessible.”

The study is a wake-up call:
The research represents a noteworthy advancement that may pave the way for effective treatments related to overeating. It enhances our comprehension of the persistent cravings for sugary desserts, even when one feels excessively full following a substantial meal.
Furthermore, Dr. Henning Fenselau remarked, “Existing medications can inhibit opiate receptors in the brain; however, the resulting weight loss is not as significant as that achieved with appetite-suppressant injections. We are optimistic that a combination of these approaches or with other therapies could prove beneficial. Nonetheless, further investigation is necessary.”
