Influencers excel at shaping opinions, effectively transmitting their ideologies to their audience. Research has examined how male influencers on social media contribute to the formation of misogynistic attitudes among young men through their content.

Who are manfluencers?

Male social media influencers, commonly referred to as "manfluencers," focus on sharing their perspectives regarding masculinity and gender dynamics. These individuals often utilize podcasting as their primary medium. According to research, they have established a community known as the 'manosphere,' which predominantly advocates for anti-feminist sentiments and traditional gender norms.

The research underscores the significant influence these figures can exert on young men who regularly engage with their content. Such exposure can lead to the dehumanization of women and frame feminism as a hostile, anti-male force. This impact is particularly pronounced among young men who perceive themselves as being rejected by women, thereby reinforcing their negative views towards women and positioning feminism as a substantial threat to their societal standing.

Impact of manfluencers on gender roles views

The research was carried out among young men in Sweden, a nation recognized for its progressive gender policies. Nevertheless, it is alarming to note an increase in misogynistic online behavior in this context.

Three distinct series of surveys were administered, leading to three significant findings. Firstly, the content produced by male influencers exhibited elevated levels of misogynistic attitudes. Secondly and thirdly, studies that exposed participants to the content of these male influencers demonstrated that such exposure intensified distrust towards women and reinforced misogynistic beliefs.

Moreover, one of the survey's findings indicated that young men encountered harmful narratives, such as attributing all men's issues to feminism and asserting that women's prioritization of careers over family is detrimental to society. These messages serve to further entrench negative stereotypes.
