Takshak Teerth Bada Shivala, also known as Takshakeshwar Nath Temple, is a revered Hindu shrine located in the Dariyabad area along the banks of the Yamuna River in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India. This temple holds significant religious importance due to its association with Lord Shiva and the serpent king, Takshak.

Deity and Religious Significance

The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Takshakeshwar Nath. The temple is uniquely associated with Takshak, the king of serpents, who is considered the lord of the entire snake race in Hindu mythology. Devotees believe that offering prayers at this temple can absolve them of snake-related afflictions, such as Kaal Sarp Dosha and Nag Dosha, and protect them from snake bites. It is also believed that visiting this temple ensures that one's descendants are safeguarded from snake venom.

Historical Background

The temple's origins are steeped in ancient lore, with references found in the 82nd chapter of the Prayag Mahatamya within the Padma Purana. According to legend, after King Parikshit was bitten by Takshak Nag, five idols were installed at this site as an act of atonement. Another narrative suggests that Takshak Nag, after being banished from Mathura by Lord Krishna, took residence at this location, now known as Takshak Kund. Archaeological excavations in the area have unearthed ancient stone sculptures, indicating the temple's historical significance.

Takshakeshwar Nath Temple is situated in the Dariyabad locality of Prayagraj, approximately 3.3 kilometers south of Prayagraj Junction. The temple's proximity to the Yamuna River adds to its serene ambiance, making it a tranquil spot for devotees and visitors alike. 

Special Features

One of the temple's unique aspects is the presence of multiple Shiva Lingas, including the main Takshakeshwar Mahadev Linga, which is adorned with a copper arghya and crowned by an idol of the serpent deity. The temple complex also houses idols of other deities such as Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeya, and Lord Hanuman. Devotees visit this temple seeking relief from astrological afflictions related to Rahu and Ketu, as well as to perform rituals for the peace of Kaal Sarp Yoga and Nag Dosha. 

During the auspicious month of Sawan and festivals like Maha Shivratri, the temple witnesses a significant influx of devotees who come to offer special prayers and seek blessings.
