Study Uncovers Key Trait for Success on Dating Apps
3 days ago | 5 Views
Do not form opinions based solely on appearances? Or do you? The culture surrounding dating apps presents a contrasting narrative, emphasizing looks over personality. A study featured in Computers in Human Behavior Reports indicates that physical attractiveness significantly influences the likelihood of receiving matches on these platforms. While traits such as personality and humor may become relevant later, initial swipes are primarily determined by appearance. In terms of first impressions, attractive looks tend to create a more favorable impact. If you find yourself lacking matches on dating apps, it may be that your photos are not appealing.
Looks matter the most

Online dating applications operate as rapid platforms where users swiftly evaluate profiles, gaining a brief insight into an individual's life. These platforms place significant emphasis on visual attractiveness; regardless of how unique a biography or charming a quote may be, physical appearance predominates in creating a first impression. At least during the initial selection process, attractiveness significantly enhances a profile's visibility, increasing the likelihood of being noticed.
A study involving 445 dating app users in Germany, aged between 18 and 35, revealed that decisions made while swiping are predominantly influenced by appearance.
According to the results, the likelihood of being chosen based on attractiveness stands at 20%, whereas intelligence only marginally increases the chances by 2%.
Men and women have no difference
Interestingly, the findings reveal a surprising twist. Contrary to the widespread belief that men focus primarily on physical appearance while women emphasize personality, career, and intelligence, the study refuted this notion. Both men and women demonstrated similar tendencies in valuing attractiveness alongside other traits. Furthermore, height, irrespective of attractiveness, held minimal importance for women, challenging previous conventional views on dating preferences.
This significant discovery indicates that men and women share more similarities in their selection criteria than previously assumed. Therefore, if you are complacent and believe that your profile bio will carry the weight for you, reconsider your choice of uploaded pictures.
Solution
Regardless of the effort you invest in crafting unique bios, it is your profile picture that ultimately influences the decision to swipe. While personality and intellect may play a significant role later in a relationship, an unappealing photo can prevent you from even being considered, as you may not receive any right swipes. The outcome of a potential connection remains uncertain if you fail to make a positive first impression.
This can be quite discouraging, leading many to abandon dating apps and criticize them for their superficial nature. However, there is a way to navigate this inherent challenge.
Researchers have advised choosing high-quality images, as they can significantly enhance your chances of receiving matches. They also recommend enlisting the help of friends to identify which photos showcase your most flattering features. It is essential to take your profile pictures seriously and present yourself in the best possible light.
