Introduction

Shri Mata Sheetla Devi Mandir, located in the bustling city of Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon), Haryana, is a revered Shakti Peeth and one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in North India. The temple is dedicated to Mata Sheetla Devi, known as the goddess who cures smallpox and other diseases, and is believed to be an incarnation of Mata Durga. The temple is located in Sheetla Mata Colony, near the Gurugram bus stand, just about 2.5 km from the city center and approximately 15 km from IGI Airport, Delhi. Well-connected by road and metro, the temple is easily accessible for devotees from Delhi NCR and beyond.

Presiding Deity

The main deity is Mata Sheetla Devi, also known as Kripi, the wife of Guru Dronacharya (the royal guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas). The goddess is worshipped as a healer, especially for children suffering from fever, rashes, or smallpox. Her idol, made of black stone, is adorned with traditional red clothes, flowers, and vermillion.

History

Rooted in both mythology and folklore, the temple’s origins trace back to the Mahabharata era. Legend says that Mata Kripi, revered for her healing powers, began curing children suffering from smallpox. In her honor, locals built a shrine that gradually developed into the grand temple standing today. The current structure was rebuilt and expanded during the 18th century by local rulers and devotees.
