Introduction

Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple, popularly known as Birla Mandir, is one of Delhi’s most iconic and historically significant Hindu temples. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Narayan) and Goddess Laxmi, the temple is not just a place of worship but also a shining example of Indian architecture and cultural unity. Built in the early 20th century by the influential Birla family, the temple attracts both pilgrims and tourists from across the world.

Location

The temple is located on Mandir Marg, near Connaught Place, in the heart of New Delhi. Its central location makes it easily accessible by metro, bus, or cab. The Ramakrishna Ashram Marg Metro Station is the nearest metro stop, just about 1 km from the temple.

Presiding Deities

The main shrine is devoted to Lord Narayan (Vishnu), the preserver of the universe, and his consort Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. In addition to the main deities, the temple complex houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Durga, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Hanuman, making it a spiritually enriching experience for all devotees.

History

Commissioned by industrialist B.D. Birla and completed in 1939, the temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi agreed to inaugurate the temple on one condition — that people from all castes, including Dalits, would be allowed to enter and worship. This progressive move made Birla Mandir a landmark not only in architecture but also in India's social reform.
