A rare Ramadan miracle?
This year presents a uniquely rare opportunity for Muslims around the globe to observe the Ramadan moon simultaneously. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, along with Moon Sighting Committees from various countries including the UAE, Qatar, India, Pakistan, the USA, the UK, Afghanistan, Nepal, Oman, Iraq, Syria, Bahrain, Yemen, Turkey, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, and Germany, has officially requested that Muslims in these nations attempt to sight the crescent moon marking the holy month of Ramadan on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
Local media in Saudi Arabia reported that the Supreme Court has urged citizens and residents to look for the crescent of Ramadan 1446 H on the evening of Friday, 29th Sha’ban 1446 AH, as per the Umm Al Qura Calendar, which aligns with February 1, 2025, and to report any sightings to the nearest court.
While the moon sighting committee in Saudi Arabia typically monitors the moon in the days leading up to the anticipated start of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the Kingdom are encouraged to personally observe the moon using binoculars or other means. According to astronomers from the International Astronomical Centre in Abu Dhabi, the crescent moon, which signifies the commencement of the holy month, is expected to be visible on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Ramadan moon watch 2025:
The ultimate determination of the commencement of Ramadan relies on traditional moon sighting practices; however, astronomical calculations indicate that fasting is likely to begin on March 1, 2025. As the holy month approaches, excitement is mounting globally, with various countries preparing to observe the crescent moon on the evening of February 28.
Mohammad Odeh, Chairman of the International Astronomical Centre in Abu Dhabi, has stated that the crescent moon will be observable through telescopes in regions of West Asia, much of Africa, and southern Europe, while it may also be visible to the naked eye in significant portions of the Americas. Since the moon will set after sunset across all areas, it is anticipated that most Islamic countries will announce the start of Ramadan on March 1, 2025.
In the United Arab Emirates, Muslims are preparing to sight the crescent moon for Ramadan on the evening of February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar. Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali of the Markazi Chand Committee in Lucknow has indicated that Muslims in India are also expected to observe the crescent moon on the same evening.
Should the crescent moon be sighted on Friday evening, taraweeh prayers will commence that night, and fasting will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Conversely, if the crescent is not observed after the Maghrib prayers on Friday, the holy month will instead commence on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Regardless of the variations, the arrival of Ramadan remains a universal experience of faith, reflection and togetherness.
