The Ruhiyat-e-Hilal Committee of Telangana has announced that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan (also referred to as Ramazan, Ramzaan, or Ramzan) for the year 2025 was not observed on the evening of Friday, February 28. Consequently, the commencement of fasting will take place on March 2, 2025. Typically, the crescent moon is first sighted in regions such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and certain Western countries, while South Asian nations, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, often observe the moon a day later.

Uncommon Ramadan Moon Sighting

This year presented a notably rare instance where Muslims across the globe prepared to sight the Ramadan moon on the same evening. This alignment occurred as Muslims in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, Germany, and other South Asian and Western nations began the month of Shaban 1446 AH on the same date as their counterparts in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Palestine, Oman, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Turkey, Egypt, and other Arab nations.

The Gregorian calendar is solar-based, whereas the Islamic, or Hijri, calendar is lunar-based, which is why the sighting of the crescent moon is eagerly anticipated as it marks the commencement of Ramadan. Although the crescent moon may be observed on varying days around the globe, the fundamental significance of Ramadan remains constant.

The Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is a month dedicated to forgiveness, prayer, and personal growth, during which millions recalibrate their spiritual focus and seek a deeper understanding of their faith. It transcends mere abstention from food and drink from dawn until dusk; it is a period of profound spiritual introspection, prayer, and acts of generosity.

This month is regarded as the time when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), rendering it particularly sacred. For many individuals, Ramadan serves as a pivotal moment—a unique opportunity to abandon negative habits, fortify their faith, and embody the principles of patience, gratitude, and self-discipline.

Families and communities unite for Sehri (the pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (the meal to break the fast), thereby strengthening the ties of unity and compassion.
