The Islamic community is poised to embrace Ramadan (alternatively spelt Ramzan/Ramzaan/Ramazan) in 2025, a revered period dedicated to fasting, prayer, and introspection. For centuries, the Islamic calendar has adhered to the lunar cycle, rendering moon sighting an essential practice for establishing the commencement of Ramadan.

According to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), “Do not commence fasting until you observe the crescent, and do not conclude your fast until you see it. If it is obscured, then make an estimation.” In contemporary times, advancements in technology have augmented this tradition, with astronomical calculations offering significant assistance.

UAE crescent moon sighting and fasting dates for Ramadan 2025

Astronomers from the International Astronomical Centre in Abu Dhabi have indicated that the crescent moon, which signifies the commencement of the holy month, is anticipated to be visible on Friday, February 28, 2025. While the ultimate confirmation relies on traditional moon sighting practices, astronomical calculations strongly indicate that fasting will begin the following day, March 1, 2025.

As the start of the holy month approaches, excitement is mounting in Islamic countries as they prepare to observe the crescent moon on February 28. Mohammad Odeh, Chairman of the International Astronomical Centre, noted that the crescent will be observable through telescopes in West Asia, much of Africa, and southern Europe, while many regions in the Americas may be able to see it with the naked eye.

Since the moon is expected to set after sunset across all areas, most Islamic nations will likely announce the beginning of Ramadan on March 1, 2025. In the United Arab Emirates, Muslims will be preparing to see the crescent of Ramadan on the evening of February 28, 2025, which corresponds to 29 Sha'ban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.

Should the Ramadan crescent moon be sighted on the evening of February 28, the Taraweeh prayers will commence that night, and Muslims in Saudi Arabia will begin their fast on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Conversely, if the crescent is not observed after Maghrib or evening prayers on Friday, the holy month will instead commence on Sunday, March 2, 2025.

Fasting hours, expected weather conditions and regional differences

As Muslims globally prepare for a month of spiritual commitment, the duration of fasting will vary slightly depending on geographical location. Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, the Chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, has indicated the following:

At the commencement of Ramadan, fasting hours will be approximately 13 hours.

By the conclusion of the month, fasting will extend to around 13 hours and 42 minutes in the UAE.

The eastern regions of the UAE, including the East Coast, will observe Suhoor (the pre-dawn meal) and Iftar (the meal to break the fast) earlier than the western areas, such as Sila and Al Ghuwaifat, with a time difference of about 20 minutes.

Temperatures at the beginning of Ramadan are expected to range from 18°C to 29°C.

By the end of the month, temperatures are projected to increase to between 21°C and 34°C.

Rainfall is anticipated to be between 18mm and 24mm, with possible atmospheric disturbances typical of spring occurring in the latter half of Ramadan.
