The Markazi Chand Committee in Lucknow has declared that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Ramadan 2025 was not observed on the evening of February 28. Consequently, the first day of fasting for Ramadan this year will commence on March 02. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam, during which adherents refrain from eating, drinking, smoking, harboring negative thoughts and actions, and engaging in marital relations from dawn until sunset.

Ramadan 2025 fasting and taraweeh date:

Regarding the fasting and Taraweeh schedule for Ramadan 2025, this month serves as a period for introspection and spiritual development. Muslims dedicate more time to prayer and the recitation of the Quran, with many mosques providing additional services, including Taraweeh prayers, which are extended nightly prayers beyond the regular daily prayers. In Lucknow and other Indian cities, the sighting of the Ramadan moon was anticipated on February 28; however, as the crescent was not visible after sunset, which marked the 29th day of Sha’ban 1446 Hijri, the first fast will be observed on March 02, 2025, with Taraweeh prayers commencing on the evening of March 01, 2025.

Why does Ramadan date changes every year?

The dates for Ramadan fasting vary each year as Muslims adhere to the Islamic calendar, which is determined by the lunar cycle. Consequently, the commencement and conclusion of Ramadan are contingent upon the sighting of the crescent moon. Typically, the crescent marking the beginning of Ramadan is first observed in Saudi Arabia and certain regions of India, such as Kerala and Kashmir, as well as in some Western nations. Subsequently, it is usually seen a day later in the remainder of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other countries.

Although the starting date may differ depending on the location, the fundamental significance of Ramadan remains unchanged—a period dedicated to introspection, renewal, and a deepening of faith. Ramadan is characterized by an increase in spirituality, where acts of kindness, generosity, and self-discipline are emphasized.
