Papmochani Ekadashi 2025 fasting story
Lord Krishna explained the importance of this fast to King Yudhishthira, and it’s also noted in the Bhavishyottara Purana. According to the tale, sage Medhavi, a dedicated devotee of Shiva, underwent severe penance in the Chaitraratha forest. The celestial nymph Manjughosha attempted to tempt him but couldn’t succeed because of his vow of celibacy. Annoyed by her failure, she sang alluringly, which led Kamadev to shoot his enchanted arrows at Medhavi.

Medhavi's peace of mind slipped away when he married Manjughosha. After some time, she left him, which filled him with rage. In his anger, he cursed her to turn into an ugly witch. Heartbroken, Medhavi turned to his father, Sage Chyavana, for guidance. The sage suggested that he fast on Papamochani Ekadashi to atone for his sins. Medhavi completed the ritual and found redemption. Meanwhile, Manjughosha, feeling remorseful for her actions, also decided to fast and was able to cleanse her own sins.
