Overcoming Job Burnout: Two Strategies Explored
2 months ago | 5 Views
It is common for our professional responsibilities to extend beyond regular office hours, which can result in fatigue and burnout. Nevertheless, research indicates that there are two effective strategies to alleviate burnout and ensure that tasks are completed within standard working hours.
A recent study conducted by researchers from Wake Forest University, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), and Northeastern University in the United States highlights the benefits of taking microbreaks during work hours and receiving support from supervisors or managers as effective means to combat workplace fatigue.
Lindsay Andiola, an accountant at VCU School of Business, stated, “First, microbreaks are a straightforward and cost-effective method to manage fatigue, particularly during periods of high workload. Second, supervisory support is essential in reducing feelings of fatigue. Together, these two approaches provide significant relief for professionals navigating busy seasons or other high-stress periods.”
Findings of the study:
A research study was carried out involving 44 accountants who were surveyed regarding their work experiences before undergoing a controlled experiment focused on fatigue. Subsequently, the impact of microbreaks was evaluated with a larger group of 179 participants.
The findings indicated that participants who received supervisory support and engaged in micro-breaks throughout their workday were able to effectively reduce fatigue and enhance their sleep patterns. Additionally, these participants reported increased energy levels the following day at work.

Researchers stated in their published study, "Public accountants frequently encounter and grapple with the pressures of deadlines, extended working hours, and substantial workloads. These occupational demands result in elevated levels of fatigue and burnout, which can negatively impact audit quality in the short term and contribute to increased turnover in the long term."
Additionally, the researchers noted that engaging in micro breaks could involve activities such as reading a brief article in a newspaper or taking a moment to enjoy a cup of coffee. Supervisor support may manifest as checking in on employees regarding their work, offering assistance, or being available to provide guidance and support.
