The kitchen in a closed floor plan is enclosed by walls, creating a distinct separation. In contrast, an open floor plan enhances the sense of space and airiness in the kitchen, fostering a feeling of continuity. The absence of walls or doors permits visibility of the individual preparing meals, seamlessly connecting the kitchen to the living and dining areas.

In a discussion with HT, Architect Parul Agarwal, Design Director at FOAID Designs, provided valuable insights on achieving a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing open kitchen design.

Open kitchen with islands

The island, positioned directly in front of the stove, fosters a feeling of privacy despite its open design, effectively acting as a barrier. It functions as a versatile standalone countertop with numerous applications. Parul Agarwal enumerated the various benefits of an open kitchen island.

According to Parul Agarwal, “It provides extra storage while also offering a space for meal preparation. These islands are perfect for increasing counter space and can even accommodate seating on occasion. When hosting gatherings, simply arrange a few stools around your kitchen island! To enhance the island's functionality, some individuals opt to install a sink in that area as well.”

Adding open shelves

An open kitchen provides an opportunity to showcase your creative flair. It allows for visibility into the cooking process, which may occasionally lead to discomfort. To alleviate this, consider expressing your artistic sensibilities by arranging your beloved collections on open shelves, offering a visually appealing focal point.

Parul suggested, “Utilize shelves to exhibit carefully selected items such as ceramic dishware or small potted plants that complement the decor of nearby areas. Additionally, you can blend aesthetics with practicality by artfully organizing everyday items—such as spices or mugs—within the space.”

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial element in shaping the character of a space. An open kitchen can achieve a more unified and appealing atmosphere when appropriate lighting is utilized. The right illumination enhances the kitchen's most attractive features.

Parul recommended, “Integrate ambient, task, and accent lighting to address different requirements. Overhead recessed lights offer general illumination throughout the kitchen, while pendant lights positioned above the island contribute to the aesthetic. Choose lighting fixtures that also serve as decorative elements. Elegant chandeliers or striking pendants can serve as focal points, connecting the kitchen to the dining or living areas.”

Achieving a harmonious equilibrium between transparency and closeness

Although an open kitchen provides a light and expansive atmosphere, the presence of family members or guests may occasionally lead to a desire for privacy. 

Parul recommended, “An open kitchen can be designed to foster intimacy when desired. Think about incorporating partial walls or glass partitions to establish gentle separations while preserving the open concept. Additionally, delineate spaces with rugs or textured wall treatments that provide visual distinctions while ensuring overall harmony.”
