No Sunlight? Brighten Your Home with These Lighting Hacks
2 days ago | 5 Views
Natural light significantly enhances interior spaces, bringing a vibrant and cheerful atmosphere. Its uplifting effect can be quite infectious, elevating your mood. Similar to the warm embrace of sunlight during the golden hour, when sunlight filters through your windows, it transforms your home into a lively, aesthetically pleasing, and uplifting environment, creating a sense of spaciousness.
Regrettably, not all residences enjoy the luxury of ample natural light due to factors such as urban density, design limitations, or unfavorable positioning. However, the absence of sunlight should not deter you from achieving bright and inviting interiors. Fortunately, contemporary lighting solutions can effectively address this challenge.
In a discussion with HT Lifestyle, Ashish Kothari, Co-founder of Litomatic, provided insights into innovative lighting strategies that cater to homes lacking sufficient sunlight.
Here are the lighting recommendations he offered:
Enhancing natural light with tunable LEDs
1. Simulating daylight variations: Tunable white LEDs can mimic the natural changes in color temperature throughout the day—from warm tones in the early morning and late evening to cooler shades at midday—thereby supporting circadian rhythms.
2. Adjustable brightness: Dimmable LEDs can modify their intensity based on the available daylight, helping to avoid excessive brightness and minimizing glare. For example, a workspace with limited natural light can benefit from LEDs set between 2700K and 6500K, ensuring visual comfort without overwhelming the existing ambient light.
Strategic placement for layered Illumination
1. Wall washing for added dimension: Linear LEDs installed along vertical surfaces can soften contrasts and improve the penetration of daylight.
2. Indirect cove lighting: Thoughtfully placed LEDs can illuminate ceilings, smoothing out the transitions between light and shadow. For instance, a gallery-style corridor featuring skylights can achieve uniform brightness by using recessed wall washers that disperse light across the surfaces.
Smart sensors for daylight optimisation
1. Ambient light sensors: These devices automatically adjust LED brightness in response to current daylight conditions, promoting energy efficiency.
2. Motion-activated lighting: Particularly suitable for areas with variable occupancy, motion sensors help avoid excessive lighting in spaces that are not consistently occupied. For example, a sunlit living room can utilize smart dimmers to reduce LED brightness during bright conditions.
