Love or Manipulation? Research Reveals Reactions to Suspected Infidelity

Sometimes, a relationship reaches a precarious state where one partner suspects the other of cheating. It is typically assumed that they would lash out at their partner with heated confrontation. But, it turns out that jealousy’s wrath is a double-edged, sugar-coated sword.
A study published in Evolutionary Psychology revealed that when people believe their partners are cheating, they feel more jealous. This jealousy then manifests in two ways, some people become more affectionate and caring, while others adopt controlling behaviours to actively prevent infidelity.
Understanding the role of jealousy
Jealousy is an emotional reaction that occurs when an individual senses a potential threat to their relationship with a partner. This feeling stems from a deep-seated insecurity regarding the possibility of losing their affection.
A study involving 222 participants revealed that individuals who contemplated infidelity experienced heightened jealousy. These individuals were also more inclined to engage in behaviors aimed at maintaining proximity to their partner, either through affectionate actions or by adopting controlling tendencies.
Two ways jealousy show

The research identified two distinct forms of jealousy based on its findings: benefit-providing behaviors and cost-inflicting behaviors.
Benefit-providing behaviors involve actions such as expressing love, giving gifts, and providing emotional support. These actions are intended to reinforce the connection with their partner, ensuring that they remain committed. A notable example of this is love bombing, a relatively mild tactic used to demonstrate care and prevent a partner from seeking affection elsewhere.
In contrast, cost-inflicting behaviors are characterized by a more controlling approach, aimed at manipulating the partner's emotions to alleviate the fear of infidelity.
Both types of behaviors stem from a deep-rooted desire to maintain closeness with loved ones. The anxiety of potential loss drives individuals to respond in two contrasting manners: one through the creation of tension via control and manipulation, and the other through fostering intimacy through affection and care.
