Relationships manifest in various forms, including same-sex and different-sex partnerships. It is commonly assumed that individuals enter into relationships based on their sexual orientation, which refers to the gender to which they are attracted. However, this assumption does not universally apply. Sexuality is complex and often fluid, whereas relationships are frequently perceived in more rigid, binary terms. This disparity can lead to diminished satisfaction within relationships and may even result in separations.

For example, a bisexual woman may experience sexual attraction to both men and women. If she is in a relationship with a man, others might categorize it as a heterosexual relationship, potentially leading to the misconception that she identifies as straight. Nevertheless, her bisexuality means she may still find women attractive, even while committed to a man. This situation exemplifies the inconsistency that can arise.

Research conducted by the University of British Columbia and Lancaster University, published in Sociological Science, explored this disconnect between relationship dynamics and sexual orientation. Such inconsistencies can pose challenges within relationships, placing additional strain on them.

This imbalance may create pressure, as individuals may feel unable to express their true feelings, ultimately affecting the satisfaction and stability of the relationship.

When sexuality and relationships are contrasting

When sexuality and relationships diverge, it is important to recognize that sexuality pertains to whom one is attracted, while a relationship concerns whom one is partnered with. Traditionally, it is expected that a relationship aligns with one's sexual orientation. For instance, if an individual is in a relationship with a man, it is often assumed they are exclusively attracted to males.

However, this is not always the reality. Sexuality is not as clearly defined as relationships tend to be.

The study indicated that approximately 41% of women in same-sex relationships reported experiencing attraction to individuals outside their primary gender preference. In different-sex relationships, around 3% of men acknowledged same-sex attraction, while 2% identified as not straight.

The discrepancy between the type of relationship individuals engage in (same-sex or different-sex) and their sexual identity presents significant challenges, as individuals may feel unable to fully articulate their emotions or identity.

Whenever an individual experiences attraction to someone of the opposite sex while in a relationship, irrespective of their sexual orientation, they often encounter diminished satisfaction.

In the case of women, the dynamics differ slightly. Women in different-sex relationships are more likely than their male counterparts to experience attraction to individuals of the same sex (11% compared to 3%). However, this attraction does not appear to significantly impact the stability of their relationships. This phenomenon may be attributed to a greater societal acceptance of female sexuality compared to male sexuality, as well as the influence of toxic masculinity, which imposes societal constraints that hinder men from openly expressing their authentic sexual identities.

Bisexuals confused as straights

Bisexuals are attracted to both men and women. This situation is particularly pronounced for bisexual individuals, who find themselves navigating a binary perception of relationships that typically categorizes individuals as either straight or gay. Bisexuals occupy a nuanced position that societal norms frequently overlook, leading to feelings of entrapment as they may be misidentified as straight simply due to their involvement in a different-sex relationship. Consequently, they report lower levels of relationship satisfaction compared to their gay or lesbian counterparts.
