Eid 2025: Will It Be Celebrated on March 30 or 31? Moon Sighting Details for Multiple Countries

As the crescent moon gets ready to light up the night, millions of Muslims around the globe are excitedly anticipating Eid-ul-Fitr, the cheerful festival that signifies the conclusion of Ramadan, which is determined by the sighting of the new moon. Celebrated in various countries and cultures, Eid al-Fitr is more than just a religious occasion; it’s a worldwide celebration of togetherness, thankfulness, and kindness.

Eid-ul-Fitr date for 2025 in the Middle East and Western regions

Unlike holidays that have fixed dates, the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, which makes moon sighting essential for determining the start of each month and the date of Eid. Shawwal is the month that comes right after Ramadan, with Eid al-Fitr marking the first day of Shawwal.

Countries in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Kuwait, along with Western nations like the United States, the UK, France, and Germany, are preparing for the traditional moon sighting on the evening of the 29th day of Ramadan 1446 AH. This falls on March 29, 2025, and the Saudi Supreme Court, along with Moon Sighting Committees in both the Middle East and the West, will be on the lookout for the crescent moon of Shawwal right after the maghrib prayers.

Since the observance of the moon is essential for ending Ramzan month and celebrating Eid, it is celebrated in different parts on different days usually with a one-day difference.

If the crescent moon is seen on the night of March 29, 2025, which is the 29th of Ramadan, then Eid will be celebrated on March 30. However, if the moon isn't visible, Ramadan will last a full 30 days this year, and Eid will take place on March 31, 2025, in these countries.

Eid al-Fitr celebrations

Many governments around the globe have declared special holidays for Eid, allowing families plenty of time to gather and celebrate together.

  • Saudi Arabia has announced a four-day holiday from March 30 to April 2, with work set to resume on April 3. When you factor in the Friday-Saturday weekend, private sector employees could enjoy a total of six days off.
  • In the UAE, there will be a three-day holiday from Shawwal 1 to 3, and if Ramadan lasts the full 30 days, an extra day off will be added.
  • Kuwait is offering flexible holiday options—three days off if Eid is on March 30, and a generous nine-day break if Eid falls on March 31.
  • Other countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), such as Qatar and Bahrain, have also announced holiday durations ranging from three to six days.

Eid al-Fitr is a meaningful occasion that celebrates the end of a month filled with fasting, prayer, and self-control. It's a time when families come together for lavish meals, dress in their best outfits, and attend special prayers at mosques. One important custom during Eid is giving Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable contribution that helps ensure everyone, especially those in need, can join in the celebrations.

Homes buzz with warmth and friendliness as family and friends exchange Eidi (gifts and money), enjoy traditional treats, and reflect on the teachings of Ramadan. Whether it’s the fragrant sheer khurma in South Asia or the flaky maamoul pastries in the Middle East, food is a key part of the celebrations, enhancing the joy and sense of community.

As the moon appears and the festivities kick off, let’s welcome the spirit of Eid with open hearts, sharing joy, love, and kindness. Eid Mubarak!
