Does ‘Vegetarian’ on Your Dating Profile Reduce Matches? Research Says Yes
1 month ago | 5 Views
Personality traits, hobbies, and interests significantly influence the formation of connections on dating applications. These elements provide deeper insights into the individual represented by the dating profile. Interestingly, dietary preferences also have a substantial impact on the decision to swipe left or right. Research published in the Social Psychological Bulletin indicates that dating profiles that reference vegetarianism tend to receive lower evaluations compared to those that do not mention dietary choices. This suggests that individuals often make inferences about personality characteristics based on dietary habits and utilize this information in the context of dating.
First impressions
A study was carried out by researchers in Poland to examine the impact of vegetarianism on first impressions of dating profiles.
The researchers presented dating profiles to 404 individuals who consume meat, with ages spanning from 18 to 82. The findings revealed that participants evaluated the profiles that referenced vegetarianism differently compared to those that did not.
Additionally, the study aimed to delve into the cultural implications of vegetarianism, investigating its evolution from a mere dietary choice to a significant component of personal identity.
Similarity effect
The researchers identified the similarity effect as a contributing factor, suggesting that individuals tend to prefer partners with comparable lifestyles, including dietary habits. For those who consume meat, vegetarians may be perceived as excessively different.
Additionally, the study revealed potential cultural implications. Conducted in Poland, a nation where meat consumption is prevalent, the researchers noted that dietary choices are linked to perceptions of gender traits. Male vegetarians were frequently regarded as less masculine, which diminished their appeal to women. Conversely, female vegetarians were occasionally seen as deviating from conventional femininity.
Not all vegetarians are judged equally

It is essential to recognize that not all vegetarians are perceived uniformly. Individuals who adopt a vegetarian diet for health-related reasons tend to receive lower ratings on their profiles. Researchers suggest that this may stem from the belief that health-conscious individuals who alter their dietary choices might possess overly stringent or demanding lifestyle habits, which could create difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
Conversely, profiles indicating a vegetarian lifestyle motivated by ethical or environmental concerns are generally viewed more positively. This reflects a consideration for the environment, and such compassion is regarded as a significant quality in relationships.
Thus, the rationale behind choosing a vegetarian diet can provide insight into one's personality traits and their potential compatibility within a relationship.
