Boost Your Mood: Appreciate Your Partner’s Positive Vibes
1 month ago | 5 Views
A positive mood can be infectious; an exuberant laugh or a mere smile can evoke immediate happiness. In wedding vows, the phrase “What’s yours is mine” frequently appears, signifying a commitment to support one another through difficult moments. This sentiment is not solely serious, as the concept of "What's yours is mine" also encompasses shared joy.
Research published in Psychoneuroendocrinology indicates that when one partner experiences a positive mood, it can significantly lower the stress levels of the other partner.
Your happiness lowers your partner's stress

The research focused on older couples, thereby establishing this connection among long-term partners, with ages ranging from 56 to 87.
According to the results, when one partner exhibits happiness and cheerfulness, it leads to a decrease in the cortisol levels, commonly referred to as the stress hormone, in the other partner. Notably, the positive mood of one individual can uplift the other, even if the latter initially experiences negative feelings. This suggests that positive emotions within a relationship can serve as a protective factor against stress, helping individuals to feel more relaxed.
Conversely, a negative mood does not appear to have the same impact on stress levels. While a positive mood can alleviate stress, a negative mood does not necessarily transfer to the partner or exacerbate their stress levels.
Why spreading positive mood is important as we age
The research focused on elderly couples who had been in a relationship for an average of 44 years. According to the researchers, this aspect is significant as individuals tend to struggle with mood regulation as they grow older. The time required for stress-related cortisol levels to normalize increases with age. Additionally, the aging brain exhibits diminished capacity to adapt to stress compared to earlier years. Factors such as low stress adaptability, chronic pain, decreased mobility, and social isolation can contribute to emotional distress among older adults. Therefore, having a supportive and positive partner is beneficial in managing these prevalent challenges associated with aging.
