What was the robot?

The humanoid robot and the robotic dog are products of Unitree Robotics. The humanoid robot, referred to as Unitree G1, demonstrated remarkable progress during a unique catwalk event. It was adorned with a metallic bodice featuring maroon and cream fringes along the hem, a thoughtful design choice that enhanced the 'mechanical catwalk' with a subtle sway in its movements. Similarly, the robotic dog was dressed in a delicate lace fabric that encircled its torso.

Reactions to the fashion moment

Is this a glimpse into the future or a descent into dystopia? The event generated significant discomfort, as the comments failed to align with the ultra-modern vibe of the futuristic runway. The prevailing opinion was overwhelmingly negative. One commenter expressed a common concern in the ongoing debate of robots versus humans, sarcastically asking, “Are the models going to lose their jobs too?”

Another observer noted the awkward movement of the humanoid, remarking, “Has that robot just dismounted from a 10-day horseback journey?” Meanwhile, a third individual humorously stated, “Clearly hasn’t perfected the Gisele Bundchen walk yet!” This remark underscored the reality that, despite the inclusion of robots, they still have considerable progress to make before they can match the fierce elegance exhibited by iconic human models on the runway.

The reactions are particularly striking as this marks the first instance of a humanoid robot taking center stage on the runway in a manner akin to human models. In the past, robots participated in live shows but played a more passive role, with a human leading the performance.

Not the first time

As previously noted, while this may be the inaugural occasion of a humanoid robot walking the runway, it is by no means the first time such a robot has participated in a fashion show. Earlier this year, in March, during the Giuseppe Di Morabito show, supermodel Yasmin Wijnaldum engaged in a compelling live performance on the runway, interacting with Ameca, the world's most advanced humanoid robot.
