Xiaomi SU7 Crash Claims Three Lives; Founder Promises Full Cooperation Amid Autopilot Concerns
2 days ago | 5 Views
On March 29, a tragic accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan resulted in the deaths of three individuals. This high-speed incident marks the first significant crash linked to Xiaomi's newly released electric vehicle, raising concerns about its autonomous driving capabilities.
As reported by Reuters, the SU7 was operating in Autopilot mode and was traveling at 116 kph (72 mph) when the crash occurred. The driver attempted to take control after receiving an obstacle alert and tried to decelerate. However, the vehicle collided with a cement pole at a speed of 97 kph (60 mph) and reportedly burst into flames upon impact. Initial reports also mentioned that the car key failed to unlock the doors, adding to the safety concerns.
In the wake of this tragic event, Xiaomi's founder, Lei Jun, took to Weibo to express his condolences and assure the public of the company's commitment to transparency. He shared that he felt "heavy-hearted" and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
"I believe it's time to act without delay," Lei emphasized, assuring that Xiaomi would take responsibility and work closely with the families of the victims and the community.
Safety measures and inquiry
Xiaomi has confirmed that the standard version of the SU7, the car involved in the accident, was equipped with collision warning and emergency braking features. However, the company acknowledged that the system currently struggles to detect smaller obstacles like cones, stones, or animals.
While Xiaomi has verified that a fire occurred after the crash, it's unclear whether the vehicle's doors were operational at the time, as the company has not yet been able to access the car for further investigation.
This incident has raised serious concerns about Xiaomi's electric vehicle technology, especially regarding its autonomous driving functions. As a result, investors reacted negatively, leading to a 5.5 percent drop in Xiaomi's stock, which underperformed compared to the Hang Seng Tech index.
