The Indian subcompact SUV segment has recently welcomed the Skoda Kylaq as its latest addition. This model marks the inaugural entry of the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India group into this category. In parallel, Skoda's sister brand, Volkswagen, is preparing to make its foray into the market with the Tera subcompact SUV, which has been spotted undergoing testing in Argentina.
The Volkswagen Tera is primarily aimed at the Brazilian market, but it is also set to be launched in India, given the similarities between the two rapidly developing markets.
Similar to the Skoda Kylaq, the Volkswagen Tera for the Indian market will be constructed on the MQB-A0-IN platform utilized by the group. The spy images indicate that the Tera will feature a more crossover-like design, in contrast to the boxy appearance of the Kylaq. Additionally, the Volkswagen Tera will be shorter in height compared to the Skoda Kylaq.
Volkswagen Tera: What else is known?
The Volkswagen Tera is set to introduce a new design language distinct from the existing range of Volkswagen SUVs. It will initially be produced exclusively in Brazil, where it will be positioned beneath the Volkswagen T-Cross (Taigun). Anticipated design features for the Tera include a blacked-out front grille, LED headlights with integrated daytime running lights (DRLs), active air channels in the front bumper, and wrap-around LED tail lights at the rear.
Internally, similar to the Skoda Kylaq, the VW Tera will reflect the cabin ambience of the Volkswagen Taigun. This subcompact SUV is expected to be equipped with a 10-inch infotainment display and a digital cockpit, among other features. The vehicle will be powered by a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine, which is also utilized in the Volkswagen Taigun. Transmission options will comprise both a manual gearbox and a six-speed automatic transmission.
The sub-four metre compact SUV segment has been experiencing significant expansion globally. In India, this segment is also the fastest growing, contributing the largest portion of revenue for automotive manufacturers.
Several factors, including affordability relative to larger SUVs, a boxy and elevated design, and overall practicality, have been driving this growth. To capture a substantial share of this market, nearly all major automakers have introduced their own models in this category.
