Volkswagen has just released the first teaser for what’s expected to be its most budget-friendly electric vehicle in Europe. Tentatively named the Volkswagen ID.1, this upcoming concept is set to make its debut on March 5, 2025, and it hints at a production model that should be priced around 20,000 Euros (roughly ₹18 lakh) when it hits the market in 2027.

During a presentation at the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, CEO Thomas Schäfer shared his vision for the brand's future. He emphasized the significance of this entry-level EV concept, stating, “We’re aiming for an affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen made in Europe for Europe. This will be the Champions League of automobile manufacturing.”

Volkswagen's New Budget-Friendly Electric Vehicle Concept

The new entry-level EV is set to join the production version of the ID. 2all1, which is part of VW's strategy for their fresh lineup of electric small cars. You can expect the Volkswagen ID 2all1 to roll into European dealerships by 2026, starting at around 25,000 Euros (about ₹22.71 lakh). Both this model and the new entry-level EV will be built on the modular electric drive (MEB) platform, though the entry-level version will use a shorter variant.

The teaser video hints at a boxy look with rectangular headlights featuring 3D LED graphics. The LED daytime running lights are stacked vertically, and the closed black grille showcases an illuminated VW logo. This upcoming EV is likely to have a tall design to maximize interior space. It’s expected to be powered by a single motor and a compact battery to keep costs down. Not only will this entry-level EV carry the VW badge, but you can also look forward to similar designs being shared with EVs from Skoda Auto and Seat in Europe.

The ID. 2all1 concept-based electric car along with the upcoming entry-level EV will drive Volkswagen's compact EV strategy for Europe

Volkswagen is all set to push its compact electric vehicle game in Europe with the ID. 2all1 concept and a new entry-level EV on the way. They’re feeling pretty confident in the EV market, having sold more than 1.35 million ID models since 2019, which includes around 500,000 ID.3s. In 2024 alone, they moved 383,100 electric cars.

Volkswagen's Electric Vehicle Plans for India

It's still unclear if Volkswagen's new entry-level EV will make its way to India. Instead, the EV designed for the Indian market will use a totally different platform called the India Main Platform (IMP), which is based on the China Main Platform (CMP). This platform will be heavily localized, and we can expect a new electric SUV to emerge by the end of the decade.
