The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has just revealed their 2025 season car, the W16. This new ride comes with some major tweaks to its aerodynamics and mechanics, all designed to boost performance and reliability. It specifically tackles the issues that held back the last model, especially in tight corners and with tire temperature management.

New tech advancements

The W16 has seen a ton of updates, with almost every aerodynamic part getting a makeover. The front suspension has been revamped for better responsiveness, and there are more tweaks under the chassis to boost overall balance. It sports a molded carbon fiber and honeycomb composite monocoque, along with a carbon fiber body that features a new engine cover, sidepods, floor, and wings to enhance airflow.

Since this is the fourth year under the current regulations, making big improvements in lap times is trickier, but Mercedes is all about fixing the inconsistencies from last year. The revamped front suspension, which uses carbon fiber wishbones and push rod-activated springs and dampers, aims to enhance front-end grip, especially in those tight low-speed corners.

Boosting performance

The Mercedes-AMG F1 M16 E PERFORMANCE power unit sticks with its 1.6-litre V6 hybrid setup, hitting a max rpm of 15,000 and using a high-pressure direct injection system that can go up to 500 bar. Even though the development of the power unit is on hold, they've rolled out updates for reliability and calibration to boost efficiency. The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) can add an extra 161 hp, while the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat) has no limits on how it recovers and uses energy.

On top of that, Mercedes has upgraded its eight-speed sequential gearbox, making it lighter with a carbon fibre main case to improve weight distribution and shifting performance. The braking system is equipped with carbon/carbon discs, Brembo monobloc calipers, and a rear brake-by-wire system for better control.

Finding the right mix between limitations and future growth

Mercedes is gearing up for a big regulatory shake-up in 2026, and they’ve got to juggle their current performance with future plans. The team is already on the case with the next-gen power unit while making sure the W16 stays competitive for the 2025 season. The car still uses a lithium-ion battery, which has a minimum weight of 20 kg and can deliver up to 4 MJ of energy per lap.

Getting this balance right is crucial for keeping their momentum going this season and into the future, especially as they get ready for the switch to new sustainable fuels and aerodynamic rules in 2026.
