Uno Minda’s Electric Bike: The Future of Mobility or Just a Concept?
15 days ago | 5 Views
Safety has emerged as a paramount concern in the Indian automotive sector in recent times. Although innovative technologies such as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have been integrated into mass-market vehicles, two-wheelers—particularly those that are budget-friendly—continue to lack many of these advanced safety features. While systems like Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) are already operational in various parts of the world, the situation in India remains markedly different. Uno Minda aims to address this gap.
During the recent Bharat Mobility Global Auto Component Expo 2025, Uno Minda unveiled its own electric motorcycle, equipped with cutting-edge electric vehicle and safety technologies. A standout feature is its proprietary ARAS, which utilizes a front-mounted radar and a rear camera to assist riders in navigating challenging situations and preventing accidents.
This system encompasses essential safety features such as Blind Spot Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Change Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The Blind Spot Detection feature monitors vehicles in areas that are difficult to see and alerts the rider visually. Lane Change Assist provides warnings in high-speed situations when another vehicle approaches too closely. Forward Collision Warning activates if the rider is approaching another vehicle at an excessive speed, offering both visual and auditory alerts. Additionally, Adaptive Cruise Control automatically modifies the motorcycle’s speed in accordance with traffic conditions, maintaining a safe distance and minimizing the likelihood of rear-end collisions.
Furthermore, Uno Minda has introduced safety features tailored specifically for the Indian market. The motorcycle is equipped with an advanced handlebar assembly that detects whether the rider is gripping the handlebars. Additionally, a helmet detection system ensures that the motorcycle will not start unless the rider is wearing a helmet.
In addition to these features, the motorcycle also highlighted the company's various products, including the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, advanced seating for two-wheelers, dynamic signal projectors, elemental tail lights, and more. Furthermore, the company presented its X-in-1 electric powertrain configuration. This system is designed to consolidate multiple components, such as the battery management system, motor controller, telematics, and others, into a single unit.
Is the electric motorcycle coming soon?
Uno Minda has stated that the electric motorcycle unveiled at the Bharat Mobility Global Auto Component Expo 2025 is fully prepared for production. However, the company does not intend to enter manufacturing. The primary objective was to showcase its technological advancements. While these technologies are already available in the market, Uno Minda aims to tackle one of India's most significant challenges—affordability.
Nirmal Minda, Chairman and Managing Director of Uno Minda, underscored that any new technology or innovation requires time for the public to comprehend its advantages. “It’s about the use case. We are also examining affordability. Any new product, feature, or innovation necessitates time to achieve acceptance," he stated.
Sunil Bohra, Executive Director and Group Chief Financial Officer of Uno Minda, further noted that the emphasis is on enhancing vehicle safety, improving the rider experience, and strengthening the system. "There are numerous ideas, but the primary challenge is how to implement all of this at a cost-effective price for the Indian market," he remarked.
