Uber, the leading ride-hailing service, has rolled out a series of new safety features aimed at enhancing security for both drivers and passengers on its motorcycle platform, Uber Moto. On Wednesday, the company revealed plans to introduce technology that encourages helmet use among drivers and supports the recruitment of female drivers.

One of the standout upgrades is an AI-powered "helmet selfie" feature that requires drivers to verify they are wearing a helmet before starting a trip. Additionally, riders will receive in-app prompts, known as "helmet nudges," to remind them to put on their helmets, all in an effort to foster safer riding habits.

Safety kits distributed across the country

Uber has rolled out 3,000 safety kits in India, which include helmets, reflective jackets, safety stickers, and other essential safety gear. In the first phase, some Uber Moto drivers in Delhi received these kits from Harsh Malhotra, the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways.

Manish Bindrani, Head of Regional Supply Growth for Uber India and South Asia, stated, “With the introduction of new safety features and the distribution of safety kits, we are reinforcing our commitment to safer roads while providing drivers with flexible earning opportunities.”

Additionally, to enhance safety and comfort for women using the platform, Uber is introducing a new feature that allows female drivers to select female-only riders. This initiative aims to encourage more women to consider driving as a flexible income option.

Bike taxis are a popular choice in India due to their affordability and ability to maneuver through traffic. According to the India Economic Impact Report 2024 by UK-based Public First, Uber's auto and moto services contributed ₹36,000 crore to the economy in 2024. A KPMG report predicts that the industry could generate 5.4 million flexible jobs by 2030.

Harsh Malhotra, the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, emphasized the government's commitment to road safety through stringent laws, smart traffic systems, and public awareness. While acknowledging public resistance to higher fines, he maintained that they are essential deterrents. “Penalties, no matter how high, cannot compare to the value of human lives," Malhotra asserted, highlighting the importance of making road safety a habitual practice.
