Toyota Kirloskar Motor has consistently promoted the necessity of a diverse powertrain technology approach rather than concentrating solely on electric vehicles. The Japanese automaker intends to implement this strategy within the Indian passenger vehicle sector. At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the company presented the Toyota Urban BEV concept and the bZ4X electric vehicle, while contemplating the introduction of electric, flex fuel, electrified flex fuel, and plug-in hybrid models in the Indian market.

Toyota believes that, given the current landscape, a strong hybrid represents the most feasible solution, complemented by various technologies such as electric, flex fuel, electrified flex fuel, and plug-in hybrid options in India. In a statement to PTI, Tadashi Asazuma, Deputy Managing Director - Sales-Service-Used Car at Toyota Kirloskar Motor & Lexus India, emphasized the significance of India as a key market for the brand. "In terms of technology, we are considering how to best contribute to the Indian automotive landscape. At this moment, we regard the strong hybrid as a practical starting point," he remarked.

Further elaborating, Vikram Gulati, Executive Vice President & Country Head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, indicated that the company is pursuing a multi-pathway strategy that encompasses battery electric, hydrogen, plug-in hybrid, and flex-fuel technologies. "Our perspective is that we must address the challenges of carbon emissions and energy at an accelerated pace. This requires a comprehensive approach, including electric, flex fuel, electrified flex fuel, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options, as consumer needs vary significantly," Gulati explained.

Regarding Toyota's intentions for fully electric vehicles in India, he noted that there has been a recent slowdown in the global EV market, which may or may not reflect trends in India. The company aims to first assess customer preferences before making any commitments, although he did not disclose a specific timeline for the launch of an electric vehicle.
