Toyota is considering the rebranding of its sole electric vehicle, the bZ4X. This model, which was presented in India during the Auto Expo 2023, has a name that resembles a random designation for a character from the Star Wars franchise and is expected to be renamed. The Japanese automaker is actively engaged in the process of rebranding this electric vehicle.

According to Toyota, the "bZ" in the electric crossover's name signifies its commitment to a 'Beyond Zero' emissions strategy. The numeral "4" indicates the vehicle's size, akin to the Toyota RAV4, while the letter "X" denotes its classification as a crossover. Although these explanations may seem reasonable from the manufacturer's perspective, the name itself lacks appeal. Recognizing this, Toyota has opted to pursue a rebranding initiative for the EV, as reported by Motor Illustrated. However, specifics regarding the new name have yet to be disclosed. This information was reportedly shared by Patrick Ryan, Regional Director of Toyota Canada.

The Toyota bZ4X is built on the same platform as the Lexus RZ, which is also shared with the Subaru Solterra. While Subaru provides the Solterra with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, both the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ are equipped with a single-motor front-wheel-drive system. The bZ4X electric crossover boasts a range of up to 405 kilometers on a single charge.

Despite being a prominent player in the global automotive industry, Toyota has been perceived as slow in its transition to electric vehicles. The company has frequently articulated its position, indicating that it is not prepared to exclusively adopt electric powertrains as a substitute for internal combustion engines. Instead, Toyota has been promoting a broader array of cleaner powertrain technologies, including hybrids and hydrogen-electric systems. However, this strategy has faced criticism and has positioned Toyota at a disadvantage in the race for advancements in cleaner mobility technologies.
