Tesla’s Legal Shockwave: Critics Face Lawsuits Over Negative Reviews

Consider the scenario of purchasing a vehicle, discovering certain aspects that do not meet your expectations, voicing your concerns, and subsequently facing legal action from the manufacturer for expressing your opinion. This situation may seem unusual, yet a recent report by the Associated Press reveals that Tesla has indeed pursued legal action against six of its customers in China who expressed dissatisfaction with their electric vehicles.

According to the report, Tesla initiated lawsuits against these customers for either reporting quality issues or attributing mechanical failures to accidents they experienced. Furthermore, the company has also taken legal action against six bloggers and two media organizations for similar grievances.

The situation becomes even more perplexing.

It has been reported that Tesla may be prevailing in a significant number of these legal disputes or has achieved out-of-court settlements. Conversely, among the 81 lawsuits filed by Tesla owners against the company, Tesla has reportedly won a considerable number of cases.

As the leading manufacturer of electric vehicles globally, Tesla operates in China, the largest market for both traditional and electric vehicles. The competitive landscape is intense, particularly with domestic rival BYD expanding its international presence to challenge Tesla's dominance. While it is not uncommon for companies across various sectors to litigate against customers, Tesla is facing criticism for its seemingly aggressive approach.

The Associated Press highlights a case involving a Chinese customer who was sued by Tesla after she publicly protested a Model 3 accident that resulted in her parents being hospitalized. Her demonstration, which included sitting atop her damaged vehicle, garnered significant media attention, yet she ultimately lost the lawsuit. Another instance involves a blogger who faced legal action from Tesla after reporting on alleged brake failures in his Model S.

There is an emerging perspective suggesting that a smear campaign against Tesla is gaining traction in China, a market where numerous domestic competitors are vying for success in the electric vehicle sector. Although the company has a substantial fan base in the Asian country, its American origins may not be universally appreciated.
