It has been eight years since Tesla revealed the Roadster electric sports car. Although CEO Elon Musk pledged to launch the vehicle in 2020, it has yet to be delivered. In the interim, Tesla has introduced several highly anticipated models, including the Model Y and Cybertruck. Nevertheless, the official Tesla website still accepts reservations for the Roadster, priced at $50,000, which is equivalent to over ₹42.95 lakh.

Tesla and its dynamic CEO, Elon Musk, are recognized for making ambitious commitments. However, they have also gained a reputation for frequently overpromising and underdelivering. A notable instance of this is the Cybertruck, which was unveiled in the late 2010s. The launch of this electric pickup truck, characterized by its unconventional design, faced numerous delays before it finally commenced production in November 2023.

This vehicle gained significant attention as the first car to be launched into space aboard a SpaceX rocket and is one of the most anticipated electric cars from the company. The second-generation Roadster was introduced by the automaker in 2017, with Elon Musk pledging its market release in 2020. Although that timeline was not met, Tesla continued to accept orders for the electric vehicle.

Tesla prioritising mainstream models

A few months back, the Tesla CEO thanked the Roadster deposit holders for their patience and claimed that the automaker was close to finalizing the design of the EV. Interestingly, after the original claim of the Tesla Roadster entering production in 2020, the dates slipped to 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 consecutively, the website now suggests a 2025 build date. However, Musk also revealed that the OEM would always prioritise the mainstream models which include the Model 3, Model Y, Model X and Model S alongside the Cybertruck. Hence, it is highly possible that the Roadster may take some more years to actually see the daylight.

Currently, Tesla is focusing on its much-awaited most affordable electric car, which would come as a cheaper derivative of the Model Y. With Tesla working on its India plan, this electric car, which is popularly dubbed Model 2, would come to the country.
