Tesla Shifts Gears: Job Hunt in India Begins After Modi-Musk Meet

1 month ago | 5 Views

Tesla has initiated recruitment efforts in India for various positions, shortly following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the United States and his discussions with the company's CEO, Elon Musk. This development suggests that the automaker may be preparing for an imminent market entry. On Monday, Tesla advertised multiple job openings on its LinkedIn page, indicating its intention to bolster its support team prior to launching official sales operations in the region.

The Tesla LinkedIn page reveals that the company is looking to fill 13 different positions, encompassing both customer-facing and back-end roles. The available positions include Customer Support Specialist, Order Operations Specialist, Business Operations Analyst, Service Manager, Inside Sales Advisor, Store Manager, Delivery Operations Specialist, Parts Advisor, Service Advisor, Customer Support Supervisor, and Service Technician, among others. The variety of roles being offered highlights Tesla's focus on enhancing its sales and aftersales operations.

At least five of these positions, such as Service Technician and various advisory roles, are open in both Delhi and Mumbai, while other roles, including Customer Engagement Manager and Delivery Operations Specialist, are specifically for Mumbai. This suggests that Tesla is prioritizing the establishment of its presence in both Delhi and Mumbai as it prepares for its official entry into the Indian market.

Tesla and India: An on-and-off relationship

The relationship between Tesla and India has been characterized by fluctuations over the years, with the electric vehicle manufacturer refraining from entering the Indian passenger vehicle market, despite its status as one of the most promising and rapidly expanding electric vehicle markets worldwide. A significant concern that Tesla has consistently raised regarding the Indian market is the elevated import duties. Notably, the Indian government has recently lowered the basic customs duty (BCD) on luxury vehicles priced above $40,000 from 110 percent to 70 percent in the Union Budget 2025. This adjustment is expected to benefit companies like Tesla, which may initially import vehicles into India before transitioning to local manufacturing of electric vehicles.
