Tata Punch Hits 5 Lakh Milestone: A Success Story in Compact SUVs
2 months ago | 5 Views
Tata Punch achieved the leading position in the Indian passenger vehicle market in 2024, emerging as the bestselling model and effectively ending the reign of Maruti Suzuki's prominent offerings. The SUV has now surpassed a significant production milestone of five hundred thousand units. Launched in October 2021, the Tata Punch was introduced as the most economical SUV from the domestic automotive manufacturer and has rapidly gained popularity among consumers. The model has expanded from its initial petrol variant to include electric and CNG options, further enhancing its sales performance.
The Tata Punch has consistently demonstrated strong sales, frequently appearing in the top five bestselling passenger vehicles list on a monthly basis. It reached the one hundred thousand production milestone within just ten months of its launch in August 2022. The introduction of the petrol-CNG variant in 2023 contributed to an increase in production, reaching two hundred thousand units that year. The launch of the Punch EV in January 2024 significantly boosted its appeal, leading to production hitting four hundred thousand units by August 2024. The subsequent production of the last one hundred thousand units within approximately five months underscores the SUV's growing popularity.
Tata Punch: What makes it a popular offering?
A primary factor contributing to the Tata Punch's success is its competitive pricing. The petrol-only variant is priced between ₹6 lakh and ₹9.72 lakh (ex-showroom), while the petrol-CNG variant ranges from ₹7.30 lakh to ₹10 lakh (ex-showroom). The Tata Punch EV is available at a price range of ₹9.99 lakh to ₹14.44 lakh (ex-showroom). This pricing strategy positions the Punch as one of the most affordable SUVs in the Indian market.
In its segment, the Tata Punch faces relatively less competition compared to its larger counterparts. The only direct competitor is the Hyundai Exter, which does not offer an electric variant. This limited competition is a significant factor contributing to the Tata Punch's popularity and impressive sales figures.
The micro-SUV features a practical and compact boxy design, facilitating easier navigation through dense urban traffic. It also boasts commendable ground clearance and a robust exterior, making it suitable for traversing uneven terrains. A significant factor contributing to the Tata Punch's popularity is its extensive array of onboard features.
The petrol variant of the Punch is equipped with a 1.2-litre engine that delivers a peak power of 86.5 bhp and a maximum torque of 115 Nm. It offers transmission options that include a five-speed manual gearbox and an automated manual transmission (AMT). The CNG variant generates 72.5 bhp of peak power and 103 Nm of maximum torque, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Additionally, the Tata Punch EV is offered with two motor configurations: a 60 kW (80 bhp) motor paired with a 25 kWh battery, and a 90 kW (120 bhp) motor coupled with a 35 kWh battery.
