Mahindra's latest electric vehicles, the XEV 9e and BE 6, have received commendations from two union ministers on the same day. Following a review by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, also expressed his thoughts on these new electric SUVs. On December 18, in Delhi, Goyal was observed examining the two models and subsequently shared his impressions on social media.
The XEV 9e and BE 6 were launched by Mahindra in India in November. The BE 6, being the more compact option, starts at a price of ₹18.90 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory), while the XEV 9e, positioned as a more premium offering, begins at ₹21.90 lakh (ex-showroom, introductory).
Mahindra organized a brief demonstration of the XEV 9e and BE 6 for Minister Goyal in Delhi, where he was seen observing the performance of the electric vehicles. He later remarked, “I am delighted to witness a demonstration of these impressive electric vehicles. The Modi government is committed to establishing the finest EV ecosystem globally under the 'Make in India' initiative."
Earlier that same day, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also shared his perspective on the two electric vehicles, stating, “I was pleased to see Mahindra's two newly launched electric cars! With cutting-edge technology, Indian companies are competing on the global automotive stage, which is a source of joy and pride. Electric vehicles represent the future. Congratulations and best wishes to all those contributing to this endeavor."
Mahindra XEV 9e, BE 6: Rivals, range, battery and specifications
The recently introduced Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra BE 6e mark the inaugural offerings from the automaker's electric vehicle-exclusive sub-brands, XEV and Born Electric (BE). These electric SUVs are set to compete against established models such as the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, and Hyundai Ioniq 5, as well as upcoming electric vehicles like the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara and Hyundai Creta EV. The two models are expected to be available in dealerships starting January of next year, with deliveries anticipated to begin in late February or early March 2025.
Constructed on the INGLO architecture, a modular platform for electric vehicles, the Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra BE 6e will offer two distinct battery pack options: a 59 kWh unit and a 79 kWh variant. While the 59 kWh battery pack has already been launched, the larger 79 kWh battery pack versions are scheduled for a later release.
Mahindra asserts that the 79 kWh battery pack can deliver a range of 550 km on a single charge. The electric powertrain of this SUV is designed to produce a peak power of 288 bhp and a maximum torque of 380 Nm. Additionally, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds and features a fast charging capability that enables a 20-80 percent charge in 20 minutes when using a 175 kW fast charger.
