RSV1000 Revival? Aprilia Files Trademark for Iconic Nameplate
16 days ago | 5 Views
Aprilia has submitted a new trademark application in the United States for the RSV1000 name, sparking speculation regarding the potential return of this superbike. For those unfamiliar, the Aprilia RSV1000 Mille was the inaugural V-Twin superbike from the renowned Italian motorcycle manufacturer. It was phased out approximately fifteen years ago and succeeded by the RSV4. It appears that the motorcycle manufacturer is planning to reintroduce the RSV1000 into its product range soon. Once launched, the new Aprilia RSV1000 is expected to be positioned below the Aprilia RSV4 in the lineup.
Aprilia RSV1000: What's making the case stronger
Numerous manufacturers of performance motorcycles have begun producing twin-cylinder superbikes. Some of these models are intended to replace the four-cylinder motorcycles previously offered by these brands, as global emissions regulations become increasingly stringent. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are focusing on cost reduction and enhancing profitability through more efficient operations and product strategies. In this context, it is logical for Aprilia to adopt a similar approach.
The introduction of a twin-cylinder motorcycle presents several benefits for manufacturers compared to four-cylinder alternatives. A twin-cylinder engine allows for a more economical manufacturing process and better compliance with the evolving emission standards, while still delivering performance that can rival that of a four-cylinder engine, if not match it entirely.
Recently, Yamaha, a prominent Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, introduced the R9 following the discontinuation of the R1 in many markets. Similarly, Ducati has launched the 2025 Panigale V2, which is designed to be a more accessible option compared to the Panigale V4.
Within Aprilia's lineup, there exists a notable gap between the RS660 and the RSV4, not only in terms of pricing but also in performance capabilities. In this scenario, a twin-cylinder, litre-class sportsbike could serve as an effective strategy for the OEM to attract a broader customer base. This new sportsbike would be priced more competitively than the RSV4 while providing superior performance compared to the RS660.
As of now, Aprilia has not disclosed any specifics regarding the powertrain of the RSV1000. However, it is likely that the company will utilize its existing V-twin engine, which currently powers the Aprilia Shiver and Dorsoduro. Additionally, the company is in the process of developing a new 996 cc engine for the Shiver-based Cyclone SR1000.
