Porsche Commits to Combustion Engines: Panamera and Cayenne to Retain Gas Power into the 2030s

Porsche is jumping on the electric powertrain bandwagon for its high-performance lineup. The German automaker has laid out its electric vehicle game plan, but it’s also made it clear that it will keep internal combustion engines in several models well into the 2030s. During the annual press conference, CEO Oliver Blume mentioned that the Cayenne and Panamera will stick with their gas engines for quite a while. He also confirmed that development for both models will keep rolling. Plus, Porsche is working on a new gas-powered SUV to take over from the Macan.

The Panamera just got its next-gen model, while the Cayenne has been around since 2017 and got a major facelift in 2023. Porsche has assured that the Cayenne will keep its V8 engine well beyond 2030, and the same goes for the Panamera, which will likely continue to offer V6 engines in its lower trims.

With this new approach, Porsche plans to have four cars powered by internal combustion engines available in the next decade, including the iconic 911. However, the company has stated that investing in its ICE lineup won’t slow down the launch of new electric vehicles. For instance, the all-electric fourth-generation Cayenne is set to debut later this year, followed closely by the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman. Additionally, a large, three-row electric SUV is also in the works for release later this decade.

What’s prompting Porsche to invest in internal combustion engines again?

Even with stricter emission regulations and a growing push for electric vehicles, Porsche is still heavily investing in internal combustion engines (ICE). The company has come to terms with the fact that its ambitious electric vehicle goals are not practical. Porsche's CEO has acknowledged that aiming for electric cars to make up 80% of global sales by the end of the decade is no longer a realistic target. This shift happens as electric vehicle sales have dropped significantly worldwide in 2040. In fact, just 12.7% of the Porsche cars sold globally last year were electric.
