Nissan, the Japanese automobile manufacturer, has revealed plans to introduce the next generation of its ProPILOT driver assistance system in the fiscal year 2027. While the company has not specified which models will be the first to receive this updated ProPILOT system, it is likely that the launch will occur in the global market prior to its introduction in India.

The forthcoming version will include Ground Truth Perception technology and will utilize sophisticated Lidar sensors, complemented by artificial intelligence software created by the UK-based firm Wayve.

New approach to autonomous assistance

The enhanced ProPILOT system is being developed to deliver superior collision avoidance capabilities and improved situational awareness. Central to this initiative is the integration of next-generation Lidar technology and sensor fusion, which enable a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the surrounding environment.

This advanced hardware will be integrated with Wayve’s AI Driver solution, which is built upon an embodied AI foundational model. The AI Driver has undergone training on various datasets reflecting real-world driving scenarios, aiming to offer contextually relevant and suitable responses to complex situations, akin to human decision-making.

Role of Wayve's AI

Wayve is acknowledged for creating AI systems focused on autonomous driving, which learn from real-world environments instead of relying solely on pre-defined instructions. The technology developed by Wayve is designed to adjust to various road conditions, whether in urban settings or on highways, and can be implemented across a range of vehicle platforms.

According to Nissan, the AI software will enable the system to continuously learn from new driving situations, which may enhance its performance and reliability over time.

Nissan Motor India: Future plans

In early March 2025, Nissan Motor India unveiled a preview of its forthcoming seven-seater B-MPV, specifically tailored for the Indian market. The company confirmed that this new MPV is set to debut in 2025, marking a significant addition to its product lineup in India. Following the launch of the MPV, a previously announced five-seater C-SUV (compact sports utility vehicle) is expected to be introduced in early 2026.

This SUV will compete with models such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Skoda Kushaq, and others. Nissan Motor India has indicated that it is on schedule to introduce four new products by FY26, targeting customers in the B, C, and D-SUV segments.
