Nissan GT-R to Return: New CEO Hints at Global Revival of the Iconic Supercar

2 days ago | 5 Views

Nissan's legendary GT-R is set to make a comeback as part of a broader strategy to reshape the brand's global image. Ivan Espinosa, who will take over as Nissan's global CEO in April 2025, has stated that the company's future will focus on performance vehicles. He believes that models like the GT-R, Nissan Z, and Patrol SUV are essential to Nissan's identity—vehicles that capture the essence of the brand and have a global appeal, as reported by Autocar UK.

Espinosa's vision includes building a strong lineup of a few standout models that reflect Nissan's core values. These key vehicles will represent the brand in key markets around the world, acting as ambassadors for what Nissan stands for.

Goodbye to the R35 Era

The R35 GT-R, which debuted in 2007, went head-to-head with cars like the Porsche 911 and is now nearing the end of its long production run. Sales have already wrapped up in several regions, including Australia in 2021, Europe in 2022, and the U.S. in 2024. In Japan, orders closed in March 2025, and production is expected to finish by August at the Tochigi facility.

With the R35 leaving the scene, the more affordable Nissan Z is now the sole performance vehicle in Nissan's lineup. There's no question about the GT-R making a comeback; it’s just a matter of when.

Electric Visions for the GT-R

An electric version of the GT-R is looking increasingly likely. While there's no set release date yet, Nissan dropped some hints about what's to come with the introduction of the 1000kW Hyper Force Concept in 2023. However, the company has stated that it wants to wait for more progress in electric powertrain technology before launching an electric GT-R that lives up to its legendary legacy.

Espinosa believes that upcoming global regulations promoting electric drivetrains could help make this transition happen in the next few years.

Bringing the Nissan brand back to life

Espinosa takes charge during a tough time for the company, facing declining sales in key markets and a major restructuring process. His strategy focuses on rebuilding trust in the Nissan brand by enhancing it with emotionally appealing, high-performance vehicles. Central to this vision is the comeback of the GT-R, along with other iconic models.
