Tata Motors, despite possessing a robust portfolio of SUVs powered by both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains, including models such as the Nexon, Punch, Safari, Harrier, and Curvv, was unable to achieve double-digit sales growth in December 2024, unlike its competitors Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, Mahindra, and MG Motors. The company recorded a modest growth of only one percent compared to the same month in 2023.
In December 2024, Tata Motors sold a total of 44,289 passenger vehicles, reflecting a one percent increase from the 43,675 units sold in December 2023. This figure encompasses both domestic and international sales. Within the Indian market, the company sold 44,230 units last month, which represents a two percent rise from the 43,470 units sold in the same month the previous year. These figures include sales from both internal combustion engine and electric vehicle models. Furthermore, Tata Motors indicated that while overall sales experienced minimal growth, its electric vehicle segment achieved a notable double-digit increase. In December 2023, the automaker sold 5,562 electric cars, up from 5,006 units sold in December 2022, resulting in an 11 percent growth.
During the last quarter, from October to December of the previous year, Tata Motors sold a total of 139,829 passenger vehicles, which signifies a one percent increase over the 138,455 units sold in the same timeframe the year before. Additionally, electric vehicle sales for the company rose by six percent during this period, totaling 16,119 units compared to 15,232 units sold in the third quarter of FY24.
Tata Punch was the brand's bestseller in 2024
The Tata Punch SUV, available in petrol, CNG, and electric variants, emerged as the top-selling passenger vehicle for the brand in 2024. It achieved sales exceeding 200,000 units, making it the highest-selling car model in India for the calendar year 2024.
Regarding the overall sales performance of the company, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., noted that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) experienced significant growth in its SUV segment, attributed to the introduction of new products based on a multi-powertrain strategy. He highlighted that SUV sales for the brand increased by an impressive 19 percent. “The passenger vehicle industry saw moderate growth in 2024, projected to reach a sales volume of 4.3 million units, with notable expansion in the SUV segment and continued demand for environmentally friendly powertrains. In the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, the industry experienced a strong recovery, fueled by heightened retail activity during the festive season," Chandra remarked. He further added, “In Q3 FY25, we achieved wholesale sales of 139,829 units, reflecting a 1% increase compared to Q3 FY24, alongside a retail sales growth of six percent over the same period. New product launches, including the Curvv, Curvv.ev, Nexon CNG, and Nexon.ev 45, have been positively received. In the electric vehicle sector, we recorded wholesale sales of 16,119 units, marking a 19 percent growth in the domestic personal segment, although fleet volumes saw a decline due to the expiration of the FAME II subsidy.”
