"Multi-Faceted Approach: Maruti Suzuki's Strategy to Reduce Carbon Footprint"

1 month ago | 5 Views

Maruti Suzuki, the largest manufacturer of passenger vehicles in India, emphasizes the necessity of promoting various cleaner powertrain technologies to mitigate carbon emissions and reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports. Hisashi Takeuchi, the Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki, articulated this viewpoint during the SIAM 3rd International Symposium for Thriving Eco-Energy at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, highlighting the importance of advancing powertrain technologies, including compressed biogas, to achieve carbon reduction goals in India.

Takeuchi's remarks come at a pivotal moment as the company has recently introduced its inaugural electric vehicle, the e Vitara, at the Auto Expo 2025, which is expected to be available for purchase in India shortly. With the launch of this electric vehicle, Maruti Suzuki aims to establish itself as a leading contender in the Indian electric passenger vehicle market by 2026. Currently, the automaker offers a diverse array of passenger vehicles powered by petrol, petrol-hybrid, and petrol-CNG, with the e Vitara expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

According to news agency PTI, Takeuchi has urged the government to assist in ensuring accurate carbon accounting for emissions associated with biofuels. He stated, "For effective decarbonization, it is crucial to advance all technologies. Any technology that aids in achieving national goals for carbon reduction and decreasing oil imports should be promoted." He further noted that given India's abundant agricultural and livestock resources, biofuels such as ethanol and compressed biogas (CBG) possess significant potential to lower emissions, enhance energy security, and generate employment opportunities in rural areas.

To illustrate the potential of this resource, it is noteworthy that a study indicates that the dung produced by ten cows in a single day can generate enough energy to power a car on compressed biogas (CBG) for an entire day. With approximately 300 million cows in India, this presents a significant opportunity, as highlighted by Takeuchi, who also mentioned that Maruti Suzuki currently operates 115 CBG production facilities, with additional plants in development. Furthermore, he emphasized that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the automotive sector, including Maruti Suzuki, are actively working to enhance CBG production capacity. A key advantage of CBG is its compatibility with compressed natural gas (CNG), which eliminates the need for any new infrastructure.
