The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is set to undergo a mid-cycle refresh in the first half of 2026. The German automaker has recently revealed that its flagship ultra-luxury sedan will receive significant enhancements, including a facelift. While a new generation of the S-Class featuring both internal combustion and electric powertrains is in development, the current model will adhere to its existing engine options. The 2026 S-Class will be part of the luxury brand's most extensive product campaign to date, with numerous new or updated models slated for release by 2027.

The forthcoming facelift of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class will maintain the same platform as its predecessor and is anticipated to continue offering the same engine choices. These options may encompass a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine producing 286 bhp and 600 Nm of torque, as well as a 3.0-liter mild-hybrid petrol engine capable of delivering a combined output of 381 bhp and 500 Nm of torque. The high-performance Mercedes-AMG S63 E Performance is also expected to receive similar updates, featuring its 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine that generates an impressive 802 bhp and 900 Nm of torque.

Most modifications will focus on the design aspect, potentially introducing new headlamps, air intakes, and a refreshed front bumper. The 2026 S-Class is also likely to feature interior enhancements, including a redesigned dashboard equipped with a Hyperscreen display akin to that found in the EQS all-electric sedan.

For the next generation of the S-Class, Mercedes plans to develop both internal combustion engine (ICE) and all-electric versions. The ICE variant will utilize a platform designed for combustion engine vehicles, while the S-Class electric model will be based on a dedicated platform. Consequently, the latter will not be regarded as a direct electric counterpart and is expected to succeed the EQS.

Mercedes-Benz to Maintain Production of ICE Vehicles into the Next Decade:

Mercedes-Benz is making significant investments in the advancement of internal combustion engines (ICE) following a reduction in its previously ambitious electric vehicle (EV) initiatives. In 2021, the manufacturer announced that plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles would constitute half of its total sales by 2025. However, three years later, the company revised its forecasts for investors, indicating that EVs and plug-in hybrids could represent up to 50 percent of total sales by 2030, with the important caveat that these projections would apply "only where market conditions allow."

In the same report, Mercedes emphasized its commitment to addressing diverse customer preferences well into the 2030s, indicating that it will continue to offer vehicles powered by combustion engines throughout the next decade.

In 2024, CEO Ola Kallenius revealed that the company is allocating significantly more resources to the enhancement of the ICE-powered S-Class than it typically invests in standard facelifts. Regular updates to combustion engines are necessary to comply with increasingly rigorous emissions regulations. The German automaker is anticipated to revise all pertinent combustion engines in accordance with the forthcoming Euro 7 standards, including those for the 2026 S-Class facelift.
