Mercedes Phases Out A-Class to Make Room for All-New Mini G-Class

Mercedes Phases Out A-Class to Make Room for All-New Mini G-Class

Mercedes-Benz is revamping its compact car lineup by discontinuing the A-Class while launching a new "baby G-Class." The move is said to fit with the company's effort to simplify its offerings and concentrate on worldwide demand.

After four generations, Mercedes has made it official that the A-Class will not be replaced. Mercedes' Chief Technology Officer Markus Schafer stated that the brand needed to keep complexity in check and concentrate on models with greater appeal. While the A-Class hatchback still sold well in Europe, it failed to pick up in prime markets such as China and America.

The A-Class sedan, which is currently on sale in India and the hatchback version, as well as the B-Class minivan, will be phased out as part of this restructuring. They are likely to stay in production until 2026, when the A-Class will officially be gone from Mercedes' lineup. And with that comes the demise of the hot hatch darling, the A45 AMG. These changes are aimed to shift focus toward a more globally relevant lineup, ensuring that Mercedes’ offerings cater to both urban luxury and off-road adventure.

A New Icon: The Baby G-Class

As the A-Class leaves, Mercedes will be launching its all-new "baby G-Class," built as a compact off-roader with serious offroad capabilities. Unlike other compact cars such as the CLA along with the upcoming GLA, and GLB, which will ride on the MMA (Mercedes Modular Architecture) platform, the baby G-Class will receive a custom platform to maintain the ‘G-Wagon’s’ rugged nature.

Schafer assured that the MMA platform would not accommodate the off-road demands required for a G-Class, such as big wheels and high ground clearance. Rather, the baby G-Class will have a dedicated platform designed for off-road use.

Mercedes also unveiled that the upcoming ‘baby g class’ model will make use of a lower case "g" on its title. A teaser shown earlier in the month showcased the upcoming model’s boxy design,  with roots dating back to the 1979 original G-Wagon and implied it would retain the rugged aesthetic and off-road capability of the larger model.
