Mercedes-Benz is still the top player in India's luxury car market, hitting record sales in 2024. They sold 19,565 cars last year, marking a 12% increase from the 17,408 units sold in 2023. This impressive growth came after launching 14 new models in India last year. The company aims to keep this momentum going with eight more models set to debut in the next year.
While Mercedes hasn't shared specifics about the upcoming models, they did confirm that the AMG CLE 53 Coupe will be released in the second quarter. The new lineup will include both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles. On January 9, they unveiled two new models: the EQS 450 SUV, a five-seater variant of the existing EQS SUV priced at ₹1.28 crore (ex-showroom), and the electric G Wagon SUV G 580 EQ, which comes in at ₹3 crore (ex-showroom).
Mercedes EV sales nearly double in 2024
Mercedes-Benz's growth in India has seen a significant boost thanks to its electric vehicles. The company reported that it nearly doubled its EV sales last year compared to 2023. Santosh Iyer, the MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, shared with PTI, “The share of electric cars in our total sales has increased from about 2.5 percent to over 6 percent. This clearly indicates that we’re on the right track for growth. Our new products are driving this expansion.” Notable electric models launched in India last year include the EQA, EQS Maybach, and EQS SUV.
Luxury car sales in India: Are pricier models more popular?
Mercedes-Benz has shared that there's been a notable increase in interest for its high-end models in India. They mentioned that in 2024, one in every four cars sold was a luxury variant priced over ₹1.50 crore. Iyer noted that sales for Mercedes jumped by 16 percent in the latter half of last year, driven by strong demand for these premium models.
Looking ahead, Mercedes is optimistic about maintaining this growth trend in 2025. The company revealed that their newly launched electric G Wagon is already sold out until September. Iyer told PTI, “We kick off the new year with a solid order bank of around 2,000 cars. This definitely boosts our confidence as we head into 2025."
