
Mercedes-Benz Hits Major Production Landmark at Chakan Plant

Mercedes-Benz India has reached a significant achievement by producing its 200,000th vehicle manufactured in India at its Chakan facility in Maharashtra. The renowned German luxury automobile manufacturer began its operations in India in 1995 with the introduction of the W124 E-Class and now holds a leading position in the luxury vehicle market in the country. The milestone vehicle produced at the Chakan plant is the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
200,000 cars produced in 30 years
Mercedes-Benz India reached a significant milestone after 30 years. The company manufactured its initial 50,000 locally assembled vehicles over a span of 19 years, from 1995 to 2014, while the subsequent 100,000 units were completed in nine years. Remarkably, the final 50,000 units were produced in merely two years and three months, reflecting the robust growth of India's economy and the increasing demand for luxury automobiles.

The 200,000th Mercedes-Benz vehicle produced in India was unveiled in the presence of Dr. Jorg Burzer, a member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG responsible for Production, Quality, and Supply Chain Management. He remarked, 'The achievement of 200,000 'Made in India' Mercedes-Benz cars highlights India's potential as a significant manufacturing center for the future. The Indian facility has demonstrated exceptional production flexibility, manufacturing both world-class internal combustion engines and electric vehicles under one roof, showcasing the technical expertise of the team and a high degree of adaptable manufacturing that can swiftly meet market and customer demands. The contribution of the Indian production hub to our global sustainable manufacturing strategy, through the utilization of 100% renewable energy, illustrates our dedication to sustainable manufacturing.' Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, stated, 'The Mercedes-Benz production facility serves as the foundation of our operations in India and has been instrumental in our success in the market, producing world-class internal combustion engine and battery electric vehicle products for discerning Indian consumers. First market to produce Mercedes-Maybach cars outside Germany
The Indian division of Mercedes-Benz boasts numerous achievements throughout its 30-year history. In 2015, it became the first manufacturing facility worldwide to assemble a Mercedes-Maybach (S500) model outside of Germany. Additionally, the plant has been expanded to manufacture the brand's premium electric vehicles, such as the EQS 580 sedan, which commenced local assembly in 2022, followed by the EQS 580 SUV that began local production the previous year. Currently, Mercedes-Benz offers 11 models produced locally in India. The company has made substantial investments totaling ₹3,000 crore in the country, including a new investment of ₹200 crore planned for 2024. Furthermore, the automaker has established a robust retail network with over 100 locations across more than 50 cities.
