One of the most renowned SUV models globally has arrived in India, now featuring battery power. The Mercedes G 580 equipped with EQ technology made its debut on Indian soil on Thursday, with the Edition One priced at ₹3 crore (ex-showroom). The G Wagon has gained immense popularity for its durability and the luxury associated with the Mercedes brand; however, it was not known for its efficiency. The Mercedes G 580 aims to change that narrative, offering the same level of robustness and luxury while achieving zero tailpipe emissions.

The Mercedes G-Class Transitions to Electric Power

At the introduction of the Mercedes G 580, company representatives emphasized the global cult following of the G Wagon, noting that the Indian market is no exception. With the increasing demand for luxury electric vehicles, Mercedes has recognized this as an opportune moment to broaden its portfolio, which now includes a range from the EQA at the lower end of the price scale to high-end models such as the EQS, EQS Maybach, and the G 580.

The Mercedes G 580 EQ looks identical to the ICE-powered G-Wagen, a major departure from the brand's other EQ models. It also maintains the iconic lines of the model
The Mercedes G 580 EQ retains the same appearance as the internal combustion engine (ICE) variant of the G-Wagen, marking a significant divergence from the brand's other EQ offerings. It continues to showcase the model's signature design elements.

The Mercedes G 580 is imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and is equipped with a 117 kWh battery pack, which is said to provide a range of approximately 420 km per charge. While this may appear modest compared to some of its counterparts, such as the EQS SUV 450 launched on the same day, it is important to note that this vehicle is a substantial SUV designed primarily for rugged performance rather than luxurious travel on standard roads.

Nevertheless, the Mercedes G 580 successfully integrates various design features from its engine counterpart, along with luxurious elements typical of other high-end Mercedes electric vehicles. For example, the G 580 preserves its characteristic boxy silhouette while incorporating aerodynamically optimized wheels to boost efficiency and performance. The exterior rear design has been subtly modified to enhance the SUV's aesthetics while ensuring functionality. As a formidable off-road vehicle, the G 580 is also equipped with numerous protective strips around its body.

Inside, the vehicle features a distinctive three-pointed steering wheel equipped with integrated controls. It includes a specialized Off-Road Cockpit that enables drivers to monitor and adjust differential locks and LOW RANGE settings. The transparent bonnet function, which utilizes camera feeds to assist drivers in navigating difficult terrains, has been retained. Additionally, the SUV is equipped with the latest iteration of Mercedes' MBUX system. A notable feature is G-Roar, which refers to the acoustic system that generates artificial sound signatures both inside and outside the vehicle, providing a more pronounced auditory experience for this otherwise quiet machine.

However, the question remains: can the battery power truly match the inherent capabilities of the G Wagon? Mercedes asserts that it can, more than ever before.

Mercedes G 580: Essential off-road specifications

The fully electric Mercedes G Wagon boasts a water-wading capacity of up to 850 mm and asserts its stability even on inclines reaching a maximum angle of 35 degrees, which corresponds to a 70 percent gradient. Additionally, it is capable of handling ascents on 45-degree slopes and features a ramp angle of 20.3 degrees, a rear angle of 30.7 degrees, and an approach angle of 32 degrees. With a ground clearance of 250 mm, the G 580 remains one of the tallest SUVs available.
