Mercedes-Benz is set to commence 2025 with the introduction of what may become its priciest electric vehicle in India. The G 580, previously referred to as the EQG, represents the electric variant of the renowned G-Class or G-Wagon SUV, celebrated for its off-road capabilities. The German automotive manufacturer had previously unveiled the electric G-Wagon SUV in international markets. In July of this year, bookings for the G 580 were initiated in India. In addition to its launch, the electric SUV will be featured at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, scheduled to take place on January 17.
The Mercedes G 580 will mark the inaugural electric vehicle released by the German automaker in India for 2025. This electric SUV was initially presented as the EQG concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year in Las Vegas. It will be marketed in India via the completely built Unit (CBU) method, suggesting that the electric SUV may be available in limited quantities. The anticipated price is expected to be around ₹3 crore (ex-). Here is an overview of what to anticipate from the Mercedes G 580 regarding its range, battery, performance, and features.
Mercedes G 580: Exterior and interior design
The electric G-Class SUV preserves much of its original design essence while incorporating essential modifications to distinguish it as an electric vehicle. This model is derived from the G 580 variant and utilizes a ladder-frame chassis. It features a closed grille finished in black, horizontal slats adorned with the Mercedes logo, and round LED headlights along with daytime running lights at the front. The side profile remains faithful to its internal combustion engine counterpart, with the primary distinction being the newly designed all-black alloy wheels. At the rear, Mercedes may provide an optional storage compartment designed to resemble a spare wheel case.
Inside, the electric SUV largely mirrors the classic off-roader's interior. Key features of the cabin include a dual-screen configuration that integrates a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a driver display. This setup is equipped with Mercedes' latest MBUX system, offering smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with the manufacturer’s proprietary connected applications. Additional amenities include wireless charging, multi-zone climate control, a Burmester sound system, entertainment screens for rear passengers, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and a 360-degree camera, among other features.
Mercedes G 580: Battery and range
The electric G-Class SUV will feature a 116kWh battery pack, which is sufficiently sized to enable the Mercedes EV to achieve a range exceeding 470 kilometres on a single charge. This battery is capable of fast charging at a rate of up to 200 kW. As stated by the manufacturer, this capability will allow the electric SUV to be recharged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in approximately thirty minutes.
Mercedes G 580: Performance, top speed
The Mercedes electric SUV is set to feature four electric motors, enabling the G 580 to maintain its exceptional off-road capabilities through an all-wheel-drive system. Each motor will deliver power to individual wheels, producing an impressive 579 bhp and a remarkable peak torque of 1,164 Nm. Despite its substantial size, Mercedes claims that this electric SUV can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just under five seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 180 km/h. Additionally, the vehicle preserves its off-road capabilities with advanced features such as G-Turn, G-Steering, and an intelligent off-road crawl function.
