Maserati MC20 Folgore: 2025 Launch Canceled – Here's the Reason

1 month ago | 5 Views

Maserati had intended to launch an all-electric version of the MC20 supercar, following the debut of the internal combustion engine variant in 2020. As the timeline progressed, the MC20 Folgore electric supercar was anticipated to be released in 2025. However, in response to the swiftly changing landscape of the global electric vehicle market, the Italian luxury automobile manufacturer has opted to cancel the MC20 Folgore project.

As per the updated product strategy, Maserati will not proceed with the Folgore variant of the MC20, as reported by the British automotive publication Autocar UK. The manufacturer has indicated that market research concerning the super sports car segment, particularly among MC20 clientele, has shown a strong preference for internal combustion engine models, such as the Maserati Nettuno V6, which features technologies derived from Formula 1. Customers, it appears, are not yet prepared to transition to battery electric vehicles in the near term. "Consequently, Maserati is currently focused on ramping up production of the GT2 Stradale version of the MC20 in Modena, which is set to be available to North American customers this summer, while deciding to discontinue the MC20 BEV project due to a perceived lack of commercial viability," the automaker reportedly stated.

Why Maserati MC20 Folgore will not see the light

Maserati has experienced a decline in sales recently. The Italian manufacturer recorded a total of only 11,300 vehicle sales last year, representing a significant year-over-year decrease of 57 percent. In contrast, Ferrari, another Italian sports car manufacturer, achieved higher global sales despite offering a more premium product range. In light of these circumstances, Maserati aims to optimize its product and financial strategies.

Currently, Maserati offers electric variants of the Grecale, GranTurismo, and GranCabrio, all branded with the Folgore designation. However, the sales figures for these electric vehicles have not been particularly encouraging. Compounding concerns is the overall downturn in electric vehicle sales globally. In this context, Maserati is opting to proceed cautiously with the MC20 Folgore, choosing instead to continue production of the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the MC20, which has proven to generate more sales for the company.

The automaker has indicated that it is navigating a crucial phase in its development. "While 2024 has presented challenges, these results also reflect a broader transformation within the industry rather than a deficiency in Maserati's core identity. As the luxury and automotive markets evolve, Maserati is making deliberate decisions to strengthen its future," the brand reportedly stated.
