Maruti Suzuki's e Vitara stands out as a significant highlight at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, which took place on January 17. This electric SUV marks the brand's inaugural foray into the electric vehicle segment and is anticipated to be launched in India shortly. Notably, although Maruti Suzuki is entering the Indian electric passenger vehicle market later than some competitors, the company has set its sights on achieving the leading position by 2026, aiming to surpass Tata Motors, which currently commands over 60 per cent of the market share.

Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki has expressed the company's ambition to become the foremost electric vehicle manufacturer in India within the next year. "While I cannot disclose specific sales figures, I can assure you that we are targeting to be the number one EV manufacturer in terms of production volume as an original equipment manufacturer within one year," Takeuchi stated, as reported by PTI.

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara will be produced exclusively in India and is set to be exported to over 100 countries, including Japan and Europe. Regarding the introduction of the electric vehicle in the Indian market, Takeuchi noted the strong demand for the model across various regions, indicating that all possibilities will be explored regarding the rollout strategy.

The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is set to be manufactured at the company's facility in Gujarat, with its launch scheduled for 2025 in India. The automaker is expected to reveal the booking date and pricing details for the electric vehicle shortly. The e Vitara is anticipated to offer an impressive range exceeding 500 kilometres on a single charge and will be available through Maruti Suzuki's premium retail network, Nexa.

What propels Maruti Suzuki's top EV maker ambition

In discussing the growth forecasts for electric vehicle (EV) sales in India, Takeuchi highlighted that the launch of new models and the resolution of issues associated with charging options are significant factors that could enhance the appeal of this segment to consumers. To tackle charging-related concerns, Maruti Suzuki has declared its commitment to developing a comprehensive EV charging infrastructure. A central element of this strategy includes providing home EV chargers with complimentary installation. Additionally, there will be fast charging networks established throughout cities, along with a dedicated mobile application.

Maruti Suzuki on future electric cars

Maruti Suzuki intends to introduce six electric vehicle models to its lineup soon. The company has indicated that it may market these upcoming electric vehicles through the Arena channel. Takeuchi remarked, "Future products should be allocated to the Arena channel as well. Currently, we are not considering the establishment of a dedicated EV sales channel; however, if the sales of electric vehicles see a significant increase, we may reconsider this approach."

Regarding battery recycling, he mentioned that the company has established a joint venture and is progressing with plans to broaden its network nationwide by government policy.
