60 Maruti Suzuki Jimnys deployed at the Indo-Tibetan border
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny has proven its mettle as a capable, light, and nimble off-roader, which will be key to its role in transporting the armed forces around the border regions. The five-door off-roader will be used by the ITBP personnel for patrolling, border guarding, and the movement of officers and troops.
Well-suited for extreme conditions
The Jimny is set to navigate challenging terrains characterized by glaciers and snow-laden mountains, areas that are typically inaccessible to conventional vehicles. Maruti asserts that the Jimny’s off-road performance renders it “exceptionally equipped for such extreme environments.” The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) operates in some of the most demanding landscapes, including the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas, where temperatures can plummet to as low as -45 degrees Celsius during winter.
During the handover ceremony, Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales) at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, remarked, “Today marks a significant occasion for Maruti Suzuki as we present the Jimny to the ITBP. This vehicle is perfectly suited for traversing the challenging border terrains where ITBP personnel diligently safeguard our nation. The Jimny, with its motto ‘Never Turn Back,’ embodies the resolve and bravery of our courageous soldiers. Maruti Suzuki has a longstanding partnership with the Armed Forces, supplying them with reliable vehicles. The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has served as a dependable ally for the Armed Forces for many years, and with the introduction of the Jimny, we continue this legacy to support our soldiers stationed at the frontiers. With its globally recognized all-terrain capabilities, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny symbolizes our dedication to going above and beyond in assisting the heroes who defend our great nation.”
Maruti Suzuki Gypsy and Indian Armed Forces
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, known globally as the second-generation Jimny, has been a reliable companion for the Indian armed forces for more than thirty years. Its lightweight design and exceptional off-road capabilities earned it the nickname "mountain goat," making it particularly suitable for the challenging landscapes of border areas. The Gypsy was not only user-friendly and simple to repair, but it also had the versatility to serve various roles, ranging from a troop transport to a combat-ready vehicle equipped with a machine gun. Consequently, the new Jimny faces significant expectations to live up to the legacy of its forerunner.
